Endoscopic evaluation of ulcerative colitis investigation of mucosal changes in long standing ulcerative colitis

Endoscopic evaluation of ulcerative colitis investigation of mucosal changes in long standing ulcerative colitis

Journal of the Japan Society of Coloproctology 39(2): 193-197

Mucosal changes in 21 cases of longstanding ulcerative colitis were endoscopically investigated. As the endoscopic findings, inflammatory polyposis or mucosal atropy were recognized in cases who had had at least one severe attack in their past history, while hardly any relationship between local mucosal changes and clinical course could be detected. Furthermore, rectal lesions and the oral lesions were compared in 16 cases of left-sided or total colitis of recurrent type. They were categorized into two groups, one with relatively milder rectal changes compared to the oral lesion, and the other with continuous changes from the rectum to the oral region. Recurrence index .**GRAPHIC**. showed no difference between both types but intractability index .**GRAPHIC**. was significantly higher in the former, with an average of 60.3% compared with 33.8% in the latter.
