Endoscopic measurement of gastric mucosal blood flow by the dye dilution method

A method of endoscopically measuring the gastric mucosal blood flow was developed by applying a dye dilution method. Indocyanine green (ICG) was used as indicator. By use of the present method, the changes in gastric mucosal blood flow was investigated after administration of several drugs and in experimental acetic ulcer. Gastric mucosal ICG dilution curves were recorded endoscopically, and they were found prominently reproducible. After loading with various drugs, characteristic wave-forms well reflected each change in gastric mucosal blood flow. Quantitative analysis of these waves also enabled us to know the conditions of gastric mucosal blood flow. The newly developed method disclosed that gastric mucosal blood flow decreased in 10 minutes after loading with scopolamine butyl bromide in a dose of 1.25 mg/kg, whereas the blood flow increased in 20 minutes after 1 mg/kg histalog and in 15 minutes after 0.05 mg/kg glucagon. Gastric flood flow on the periphery of the experimental acetic ulcer decreased at stage A1, and subsequently it increased together with the healing process of the ulcer. Good correlation was observed between the values measured by the present method is clinically applicable, because it enabled us endoscopically to describe good dye dilution curve. Both bloodless and easy to perform, it has high utility for the physiological measurement of local gastric mucosal blood flow.
