Endoscopic papillosphincterotomy and extraction of concrements from biliary ducts

Endoscopic papillosphincterotomy and extraction of concrements from biliary ducts

Ceskoslovenska Gastroenterologie a Vyziva 38(7-8): 380-384

Experience with endoscopic pappilosphincterotomy [EPS], indicated in 63 patients is described. The intervention was successful in 59 patients, i.e., in 93.7%. Endoscopic papillosphincterotomy was indicated in 51 patients with choledocholithiasis (86.5%) and in 8 patients (13.5%) for benign stenosis of Vater's papilla. In all patients with choledocholithiasis, where EPS was successful, concrements were removed from the biliary ducts: in 11 cases (18.6%) the concrements were excreted spontaneously, in other 48 patients (81.4%) they were extracted by the Dormia backet. Complications were observed in 3 cases (4.3%), an affection by cholangitis, which disappeared after antibiotic and spasmolytic therapy. In neither case an urgent surgical intervention was necessary.
