Endoscopic polypectomy of the colon in a general hospital results base on 8 year experience

Revista Clinica Espanola 181(8): 413-420

The role of endoscopic polypectomy in the diagnosis and treatment of colonic polyps is currently widely recognized and accepted. In fact, it has replaced open surgical exision of colonic polypoideal lesions. The first 8 years after opening the "Centro Especial Ramon y Cajal", 814 polyps were resected of which 702 were included in the study. 70% of these polyps were adenomas. Thus, given there potentially to degenerate, they were studied more in detail. The distribution, size, histologic subtypes (tubular, tubulo-villose and villose), degree of displasias and the correlation of the aforementioned factors with the rate of malignization have been studied. Lastly, post-polypectomy complications have been described.
