Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography using barium sulfate an alternative approach to the contrast media reactive patient

American Journal of Gastroenterology 69(1): 57-62

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography utilizing inert barium sulfate is presented for visualization of the biliary tree in patients with a history of sensitivity to contrast media. An immune system response is postulated to be the cause of reaction to noninert contrast media. This procedure is performed after cholecystectomy and residual Ba is evacuated by administration of an oral lipid solution.
