Endoscopic sclerotherapy of bleeding esophageal varices results and complications

Endoscopic sclerotherapy of bleeding esophageal varices results and complications

Tidsskrift for den Norske Laegeforening 106(16): 1390-1391, 1421

Patients [24] with recent or active bleeding from oesophageal varices were treated by endoscopic sclerotherapy. Regular controls and eventully repeated sclerotherpay were necessary to prevent serious rebleeding, 11 patients were treated under active life-threatening bleeding. Haemostasis was achieved in all. The frequency of rebleeding was high, in all 19 episodes in nine patients. In all cases where sclerotherapy was attempted the episodes for bleeding were controlled. Four patients developed complications - oesophageal stenosis and ulcer. We conclude that endoscopic sclerotherapy is effective in controlling severe bleeding from oesophageal varices. The complications are acceptable in the treatment of a life-threatening situation.
