Endoscopic study of radiographically benign gastric ulcers

Endoscopic study of radiographically benign gastric ulcers

Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand 71(3): 137-139

One hundred and four patients with radiographically benign gastric ulcers were subjected to endoscopic examination. In this study only 0.96 percent of radiologically benign-appearing ulcers were found to be malignant. The accuracy of diagnosis based on gross visualization alone was 97 percent. Therefore, endoscopic visualization alone is insufficient to adequately characterize an ulcer as benign or malignant and thus, biopsies should be taken as a routine whenever one encounters a gastric ulcer at endoscopy.
