Endoscopy treatment of benign esophageal strictures indications technique and results

Endoscopy treatment of benign esophageal strictures indications technique and results

Acta Chirurgica Italica 44(1): 35-42

The most recent applications of endoscopy are examined in conservative treatment by dilation of benign esophageal strictures. Thirty-nine patients underwent a total of 28 dilatations from March 1981 to September 1987. Celestin dilators was the technique choosen for most cases. Pneumatic baloon catheters (Rigiflex) have been used in selected cases recently. The results obtained proved satisfactory in 100% of the cases with only a small percentage of non serious complications (less than 22%). The importance of drug therapy and follow-up are underlined. The available data show that dilatation should be the first choice therapy, surgery being compelmentary to definetly treating esophageal reflux, should conservative therapy fail.
