Endosperm and endospermal haustoria in betonica

Izvestiya Akademii Nauk Gruzinskoi SSR Seriya Biologicheskaya 7(4): 327-332

In the representatives of the genus Betonica [B. grandiflora, B. osetica, B. abchazica] the structure of the embryo sac-double fertilization, the endosperm and endospermal haustoria formation were studied. The 8-nuclei embryo sac is characteristic for the Labiatae. The fertilized embryo sacs were identified by the presence of 2 generated synergids, the remains of pollen tubes, the increase of zygote dimensions and the presence in it of an additional nucleolus. After the 2nd endosperm division on the opposite ends of the embryo sac the mother nuclei of the micropylar and chalazal haustoria and the mother nucleus of the endosperm occur between them. In the coenocytic micropylar haustoria 4 nucleolar divisions in the chalazal take place. Haustorial differentiation is accomplished by the endopolyploidization of nuclei. The zygote is transferred from the micropylar end of the embryo sac, dividing in the cellular endosperm.
