Endosperm development in some conifers

Endosperm development in some conifers

Biologicheskie Nauki (Moscow) (3): 75-79

The ultrastructure of the female gametophyte cells during transformation into endosperm in Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abies (L.) Karst and Larix sibirica Ledeb. was studied. The endosperm cells of all 3 spp. show the same ultrastructural characteristics. During the early stages of maturation of the female gametophyte, 2 zones can be distinguished: inner starch-containing zone and external lipoprotein-containing zone. The cells of the inner zone are absorbed by the growing embryo. The protein bodies and lipid globules are the main storage structures in the cytoplasm of mature endosperm.
