Endosulfan induced changes in oxygen consumption in two species of freshwater lamellibranch molluscs

The freshwater lamellibranch molluscs, Lamellidens corrianus (Lea), and L. marginalis (Lamarck) from the Godavari River at Paithan (Maharashtra State [India]) were exposed to respective LC0 and LC50 values (reported by Mane and Muley, 1984) of commerical grade endosulfan 35 EC in summer, monsoon and winter. The rate of oxygen consumption was measured in each season. Decrease in the rate of oxygen consumption was more in LC50 group than LC0 (P < 0.001) during all the seasons in both the species, particularly in summer. The effect was more pronounced in L. marginalis than L. corrianus at 96 h in all the seasons. The results are discussed in the light of pesticide impact and environmental effect on these bivalve species.
