Enterotoxin production and colonization factor among somatic antigen groups of escherichia coli strains

Relationship between enterotoxin production, colonization factor antigen and somatic antigenic makeup was studied in 102 strains of Esch. coli isolated from patients with urinary tract infections. Thirty five per cent strains were toxigenic, of which 36 per cent produced heat-labile (LT) toxin, 39 per cent heat-stable (ST) and 25 per cent both. Most ETEC strains belonged to somatic antigen groups viz., 04, 06, 011, 012, 017, 025 and 060. Colonization factor antigen-I (CFA-I) as determined by mannose resistant haemagglutination of human group A erythrocytes, was found in 40 per cent toxigenic and in 10.6 per cent non-toxigenic strains. Although enterotoxigenicity and CFA-I were distributed heterogeneously among various somatic antigenic groups, the 'O' antigen groups found in this study seemed to be a better recipients of enterotoxigenic and CFA-I factors, resulting in a higher incidences of these factors among these groups.
