Water-soluble and biocompatible copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone and acrylamide with acrylic acid were synthesized. .alpha.-Chymotrypsin was modified with these copolymers through an activation of the latter by water-soluble carbodiimide. Under certain conditions water-soluble preparations containing up to 500 mg of enzyme/g of polymer can be obtained. The enzyme retains almost 100% activity and shows enhanced thermostability. The electrostatic complexing was inferred to play an important role in the process of modification. A capability to interact with the protein [soybean trypsin] inhibitor was estimated for .alpha.-chymotrypsin immobilized either on slow or rapidly soluble carriers.
