Epidemiological analysis of cases of malaria imported into italy during the period 1976 1980

A total of 841 [human] cases reported during the period were analyzed according to age, sex, endemic tropical zones of origin, reason for travel to these zones, and Plasmodium spp. identified in relation to the zone of origin. A large number of cases were reported from Lombardy [Italy], where those affected tended to travel to tropical Africa as tourists, while the majority of cases travelled to endemic tropical zones for business reasons on a national basis. High risk groups were those aged 20-44, and there was a clear predominance of mean among the cases. There was also a marked predominance of cases contracted in tropical Africa, and a predominance of P. falciparum as the causative agent. Chemoprophylaxis with chloroquine was recommended.
