Epidemiological aspects of staphylococcus isolated in a general hospital in belo horizonte brazil hospital das clinicas iii. thermonuclease production

, : Epidemiological aspects of staphylococcus isolated in a general hospital in belo horizonte brazil hospital das clinicas iii. thermonuclease production. Revista de Microbiologia 17(3): 208-212

A total of 57 strains of S. aureus and S. epidermidis (40 coagulase positive and 17 coagulase-negative) isolated from patients, professional staff and from the environment of a General Hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (Hospital das Clinicas da UFMG) were examined for thermonuclease (TNAse) production by the agar diffusion, technique of Lachica and col. (15), and the results were compared with tube-coagulase and deoxyribonuclease (DNAse) tests. All S. aureus strains were thermonuclease-positive, and none of S. epidermidis strains evidenced thermonuclease activity, corresponding both to coagulase and DNAse tests. The excellent relationships among the three tests confirm literature data and suggest that the TNAse test may be a suitable one for routine identification of S. aureus as for quality control measure.
