Epidemiological significance clinical morphological evaluation and behavior of pathogenic factors in chronic asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis b surface antigen in the la plata argentina area study on voluntary blood donors

, : Epidemiological significance clinical morphological evaluation and behavior of pathogenic factors in chronic asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis b surface antigen in the la plata argentina area study on voluntary blood donors. Acta Gastroenterologica Latinoamericana 12(1): 117-134

Volunteer blood donors (100,000) were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen in the La Plata. Of the donors, 0.239% were positive. Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase-serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGOT-SGPT) levels were over 2 times normal in 10-15% of the 40 patients tested. One case of chronic active hepatitis and 1 case of chronic persistent hepatitis were found following biopsy on 27 patients. Correlation between SGOT-SGPT levels and histologic damage was noted. Hepatitis B e antigen positivity in 3/29 cases was accompanied by raised SGOT-SGPT levels and some kind of chronic inflammatory change. Statistically high risk was determined for the O-Rh negative blood group and HLA-Bw21 individuals. Diminished cutaneous purified protein derivative reactivity without significant alteration of the lymphocyte population was established.
