The results of model studies on 3 commercial pig production enterprises to develop a vaccine effective against both atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia are discussed. A vaccine of wide spectral effect can be prepared using Bordetella bronchiseptica strains which are of high virulence and contain all the factors (7 to 13) of the capsular antigen, killed with glutaraldehyde and treated with aluminium hydroxide gel adjuvant. The bacterial concentration must be at least 50 billion per ml. An effective control of both nose and lung changes can be achieved when the piglets receive 2 ml of vaccine at 10, 30 and 90 days old. The problem of specific prevention of both chronic respiratory conditions can be achieved with 1 single suitable vaccine. The presence of Pasteurella multocida strains of serogroups A and D in the vaccine is helpful for prevention of both nasal and lung changes. The introduction of oily Freund's adjuvant instead of aluminium hydroxide, and inactivation with merthiolate instead of glutaraldehyde, had no significant influence on the efficacy of the vaccine.
