Epidemiological studies on bancroftian filariasis in east godavari district andhra pradesh india baseline filariometric indices

, : Epidemiological studies on bancroftian filariasis in east godavari district andhra pradesh india baseline filariometric indices. Indian Journal of Medical Research 71(MAY): 712-720

A prospective community-based study was undertaken in a rural bancroftian endemic area to elucidate the incidence of mf [microfilaria] and disease rates in nature and after different methods of control. The baseline filariometric indices observed during the initial filaria survey in the community studied and the entomological observations made during the 1st year are presented. Mf rates in the 4 villages studied ranged from 11.9-16.3% and the disease rates from 6.7-9.1%. Males in the age groups 15-24 yr and 25-45 yr had higher mf and disease rates. Mfd50 [median microfilarial density] calculated for all 4 villages by probit analysis was 6.6 compared to mean mf count of 17.6 and median mf count of 7.0. Resting vector Culex pipiens fatigans density was lowest (3.2) in May and highest (21.1) in Feb. Vector infection and infectivity rates and anthropophilic index were 7.7, 1.4 and 94.6%, respectively.
