The winter survival of P. manchouricus, the 1st intermediate host for Clonorchis sinensis, [a human liver fluke] was studied under various conditions (water-free rice field, an hallow field and in the dried drains). Field experiments were performed in the endemic southwest part of Okayama (Japan) during the winter seasons of 1975-1978 and 1981-1983. Many snails hibernated in the water-free rice field; most of these were located on the surface and just under the surface of soil. The snails in the fallow field and in the drains were found in similar conditions to those of the rice field. The field experiments revealed that the snails were able to hibernate under artificial conditions, which were identical to the winter field; the number of survivors increased when they were covered and protected with straw, dried algae and soil.
