Epidemiological studies on hemorrhagic erosion of the stomach

, : Epidemiological studies on hemorrhagic erosion of the stomach. Nichidai Igaku Zasshi 42(5): 475-486

Gastroscopic observations were made of 295 cases of hemorrhagic erosion of the stomach over a period of 8 yr. The patients were classified endoscopically into 2 groups: group A (varioliform, punctiform and linear) and group B (widespread irregularly assessed shaped). Their frequencies, localization and symptoms were assessed. Hemorrhagic erosion of group A was seen among each decade and was observed over the whole stomach. Drugs such as acetylates and antibiotics were considered to be common factors. Hemorrhagic erosion of group B was frequently seen in the 2nd decade. Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting and anorexia were common subjective symptoms of group B hemorrhagic erosion. Hematemesis and/or melena occurred in 9 cases (34.6%). The hemorrhagic erosion was most frequently observed in the antrum. Alcohol and stress were common factors. The gastroscopic and radiological findings for group B were characteristic. It is necessary therefore for cases of group B to be differentiated from malignant lesions.
