Epidemiological study of ischemic heart disease in workers exposed to carbon di sulfide

, : Epidemiological study of ischemic heart disease in workers exposed to carbon di sulfide. Pracovni Lekarstvi 32(10): 338-344

In an epidemiological study of 251 persons exposed to CS2 and 124 control subjects from 2 viscose rayon plants in Czechoslovakia, a significantly higher prevalence of angina pectoris and myocardial infarction was found in the exposed group in a comparison with the control group (6.2% and 1.8%, respectively). The incidence of diabetes was 3 times higher in the exposed group (4.8%) than in the controls [1.6%], but the difference was not statistically significant. The study presents an analysis of the effect of working conditions and age. The index of prediction of the risk made it possible to prove that in the exposed persons the risk of angina pectoris and myocardial infarction as well as EEG changes after a load increase more than in the control group. Among the risk factors of ischemic heart disease, the same applies for the occurrence of hypertension, diabetes and obesity. The occurrence of retinal microaneurysm in the exposed group (10%) was not significantly different from the control group (5.9%).
