Epidemiology natural history and prognosis of bronchial asthma in children

, : Epidemiology natural history and prognosis of bronchial asthma in children. Bulletin of the Institute of Constitutional Medicine Kumamoto University 30(3): 225-232

A retrospective clinical survey of 1062 asthmatic children in the pediatric clinic of the Institute of Constitutional Medicine, Kumamoto University, Japan was performed. Boys outnumbered girls by .apprx. 2:1. The median age of onset of asthmatic attack is less than 5 yr. Among relatives (to the 3rd degree) of asthmatic children, 70.5% had histories of allergic disorders in some forms, and .apprx. 3/4 of the asthmatic children had suffered from other allergic manifestations. Asthmatic attack occurs more often in the spring and fall. Atmospheric conditions were specified by 79.6% of asthmatic children as causes of asthmatic attack. Half the patients showed symptoms of a cold before asthmatic attack. The incidence of positive skin reactions to some allergen extracts was the same as that observed in investigations carried out in other districts of Japan. The prognosis of patients who had received hyposensitization therapy showed no statistically significant difference from that of nontreated patients.
