Estimation of cold requirements for budding of black currant ribes nigrum and red currant ribes sp

Estimation of cold requirements for budding of black currant ribes nigrum and red currant ribes sp

Annales de l'Amelioration des Plantes (Paris) 27(4): 435-450

The chilling requirements of 59 black currant and 28 red currant varieties were determined and compared using the sum of cold action calculated from daily maximum and minimum temperatures between Oct. 1-April 1. The poor performance of some cultivars in the Angers, France, region is due to high cold requirements. Mild winters are associated with very uneven bud burst and flowering, and a great reduction in yield in some varieties. A breeding program for cultivars adapted to the French climate is suggested.
