Estimation of soluble sugar contents in stalk and juice of sweet sorghum sorghum bicolor

Contents of soluble sugars in stalk and juice of sweet sorghum [S. bicolor] could be accurately estimated from the refractometric Brix degree of pressed juice. The correlation describing the relationship between the refractometric Brix degree (Y) and the soluble sugar content of juice (X) was Y = 1.11170 + 1.04819X (r = 0.9963, P < 0.01). Soluble sugar contents in 240 samples out of 350 juices were correctly determined by the use of this equation. Glucose and sucrose contents of juice determined by a YSI model 27 Industrial Analyzer equipped with an immobilized glucose oxidase membrane were in good agreement with those determined by gas liquid chromatography.
