Estuaries of the georgia coast usa sedimentology and biology part 3 sandbody geometry and sedimentary facies at the estuary marine transition zone ossabaw sound georgia a stratigraphic model

Senckenbergiana Maritima 7: 105-135

Estuarine sandbodies on the Georgia coast are perpendicular to shoreline trend and extend 3 km seaward of the barrier island coastline. Estuarine channels terminate on a delta-like inlet shoal sandbody that is crescent shaped, having a plano-convex upward cross-section. The inlet shoal has accreted seaward over muddy, fine-grained sand of the inner-self. Sedimentary facies can be distinguished within these nearshore marine sediments: estuarine facies of muddy, coarse-grained, bioturbated sand, inlet shoal facies of ripple cross-bedded, fine-grained sand and inner-shelf facies of muddy, fine-grained, bioturbated sand. The marine sediments of Ossabaw Sound and the adjacent shelf form a modern example of a regressive marine sequence. A classical shelf-inlet shoal sequence (stratigraphically equivalent to shelf-barrier island sequence) is present. This squence is overlain in erosional discontinuity by a "fining upward" estuarine sequence.
