Estuaries of the georgia coast usa sedimentology and biology part 6 animal sediment relationships of a salt marsh estuary doboy sound

Senckenbergiana Maritima 7: 205-236

Doboy Sound, the smallest saltmarsh estuary on the Georgia coast, is distinctly different from the other estuaries studied in this area. Principal facies include: bioturbated muddy sand, subtidal and intertidal laminated mud, interbedded sand and mud, ripple laminated and trough crossbedded clean fine sand and beds of coarse sand and shells. Sedimentary structures reflect the relative importance of physical and biogenic processes throughout the sound. The inner part of Doboy Sound is composed primarily of bioturbated muddy fine sand; the outer part contains fine sand and mud as flaser, wavy and lenticular bedding. Near the mouth of the sound the influence of the adjacent shoreface is indicated by increasing grain size and higher energy bedforms. Throughout the estuary deep areas commonly contain laminated mud related to a turbidity maximum. Laminated mud is also present on the estuary margins adjacent to the salt marsh. Recognizable biogenic traces are abundant throughout Doboy Sound. Dwelling tubes of polychaete worms comprise the major lebensspuren, but the dwelling burrows of decapods and the traces of anemones and ophiuroids are frequently found preserved in box cores. Shells are present throughout the sound and shell diversity decreases landward. Local shell concentrations occur as lag deposits in higher energy areas.
