Euproctus asper field observations and information on keeping and reproduction in the terrarium caudata salamandridae

Euproctus asper field observations and information on keeping and reproduction in the terrarium caudata salamandridae

Salamandra 22(2-3): 196-210

With regard to a well known location of Euproctus asper in the Spanish Pyrenees (the upper part of the Esera-valley, 1950 m alt.) different observations from the natural habitat are described. A number of specimens have been successfully kept and bred. Their requirements, with special emphasis on the diet, are detailed (benthos invertebrates of running waters). Copulations were observed throughout the year except the warm months July and August. Eggs were laid from May into August with diameters of 4.5 mm and an ordinary weight of 60 mg. After 19 days the larvae hatched with a total length of 13.2 mm at an average water temperature of 19.0.degree. C. The period of larval development varied with the water temperature between 110 days (average of 18.9.degree.C) and 245 days (average of 14.8.degree.C). At metamorphosis the larvae had a total length of 55 mm to 66 mm and a weight of 980 mg to 1400 mg. The juveniles showed varying dorsal colour-patterns which later almost disappeared.
