All varieties tested in 1965-1966 were Japonica type varieties, and none was highly resistant to all races of blast inoculated at that time. Prevalent blast races were N-race group (85% distribution). Inbred lines with Chinese type resistance were tested and showed high resistance to all races inoculated in 1967. Since 1968, Indica type varieties such as, IR8 and TN1, etc., were introduced as a parent for breeding Tongil-line varieties. These varieties were highly resistant. In 1969 the variety Kwanok, with Chinese type resistance, suddenly succumbed to new races of rice blast. The new pathogenic C-race blast was identified as being responsible. IR667 lines, including Suweon 213, were tested for blast resistance for the 1st time and were found highly resistant to the races in 1970. The variety TN1 showed a susceptible reaction in 1973. New races (T-d) occurred to which the resistant variety Tetep showed a susceptible reaction. In 1974, again the variety IR8, a gene source for blast resistance of Tongil-lines, was susceptible. This indicated possible future susceptibility, and omen of predicted blast infection in years to come. In the fall of 1976, Yushin, and Tongilchal were severely infected by the new T-2+t race of neck blast. In 1977, more races C-8+t and N-2+t were newly identified and found responsible for leaf and neck blast. Most Tongil-line varieties, excluding the resistant variety Milyang 30, Milyang 36, etc., were susceptible to the new races in the greenhouse seedling tests.
