Evaluation of a rapid tube lysostaphin test to differentiate between staphylococci and micrococci
Eighteen Staphylococcus reference strains comprising 15 spp., 12 Micrococcus reference strains comprising 6 spp., 13 coagulase negative Staphylococcus spp., 17 atypical coagulase positive Staphylococcus spp., and 155 S. aureus isolates from food products and from slaughtered animals were tested for lysostaphin sensitivity using a simple tube lysostaphin test. All Staphylococcus reference strains except S. caprae, all of the 155 S. aureus isolates, 12 of the coagulase negative Staphylococcus isolates and all of the atypical coagulase positive isolates were lysed by 10 .mu.g/ml lysostaphin, whereas all Micrococcus reference strains were resistant.
