Incidence of congenital malformations in Tianjin [China] was 5.82.permill. in 1981. It was higher in winter and spring than in summer and autumn. Multiple malformations and spina bifida occupy the greatest proportion among all kinds of cases. The data of retrospective matching investigation of 60 pairs of cases indicated that the family history of malformation of the parents greatly influenced fetal malformations (RR = 15). Viral infection in early gestational period, X-ray irradiation, and exposure to toxic and harmful materials during the gestational period are also all related to fetal malformations.
