Evaluation of simple pyrazinamidase and urease tests for identification of mycobacteria

The simple pyrazinamidase and urease tests for routine identification of mycobacteria described by Wayne were examined. Approximately 80% (42/53) of the strains belong to Mycobacterium tu berculosis, M. bovis or M. avium-intracellulare. Among these only 2 (4.8%) behaved differently in the pyrazinamidase test and one (2.4%) in the urease test. The technique can be applied to mycobacteria in a routine diagnostic laboratory.
