Evaluation of soil fumigants and application methods for the control of fusarium wilt of watermelon citrullus lanatus

The soil fumigants DD[dichloropropene-dichloropropane]-MENCS and sodium azide were more effective than metham or DD-chloropicrin for the control of Fusarium wilt of watermelon (C. lanatus) on land severely infested with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum. Seedling wilt in the susceptible cultivar Garrisonian was controlled by fumigation of row-centered 186 cm wide bands and by broadcast fumigation with DD-MENCS at 281 l/ha or sodium azide at 33.6 kg/ha, but was not controlled consistently by fumigation of 25 cm or 76 cm row-centered bands. Highest yields of the highly resistant 'Calhoun Gray' and moderately resistant 'Crimson Sweet' cultivars were obtained from the broadcast treatments and the 186 cm row-centered band treatments. The application of chemicals before bed formation, resulting in deeper fumigation, improved fumigant effectiveness, especially that of sodium azide.
