The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of natamycin in the treatment of fungal infections in diabetic children because different forms of fungi often develop in diabetics. One hundred forty-seven hospitalized children of both sexes with candidiasis of the oral mucosae (11 patients), gastrointestinal tract (27), skin (58), and nail folds (21) were included in the study. Patients were treated with natamycin drops, drops plus tablets, or cream for periods ranging from six to 12 days. The criteria for evaluation included pruritus, burning, erythema, edema, and dark brown pseudomembranes on the oral mucosa. Natamycin was found to be very effective; complete cure was obtained in 87% of cases. No adverse effects were observed.
