Sera [human] containing cytotoxins against antigens of the HLA[histocompatibility antigen]-A locus in some cases yielded positive reactions only with B [bone marrow derived] lymphocytes of a certain donor, but not with his T [thymus derived] lymphocytes. Such results may create a false idea as to the presence of a pool of antibodies against antigens of the HLA-A (B) locus and against specific antigens of B lymphocytes in the serum. Positivity with B cells vs. negativity with total peripheral lymphocytes is an insufficient criterion for defining B cell antibodies. For differentiation of both antibody types the method based on blocking HLA-A, -B, -C receptors by anti-B2 -microglobulins, as described by Bernoco et al. (1976), seems the most suitable.
