Evidence of circulating platelet clumps in thrombo embolic disease

Evidence of circulating platelet clumps in thrombo embolic disease
Platelet clumps were determined in vivo by the Wu and Hoak method. In various heart diseases evidence of a low aggregation index was found: Leriche syndrome 38 cases (index .+-. 0.52 .+-. 0.05 against the normal 0.91 .+-. 0.05); vascular diseases 24 cases (0.40 .+-. 0.006); in the course of extracorporeal circulation 14 cases (0.5 .+-. 0.021); thrombophlebitis 25 cases (0.84 .+-. 0.065). The aggregation index returned to normal values (0.84 .+-. 0.065) in 12 cases of Leriche syndrome after dipyridamole treatment. In experiments on 11 rabbits perfused with a thrombin solution (24/kg body weight), decrease of the aggregation index from 0.91 .+-. 0.085 to 0.43 .+-. 0.035 demonstrated the reliability of the method. The simplicity of the technique, its reproducibility under experimental conditions and normalization of the values after treatment, demonstrate the practical value of the technique for the determination of circulating platelet clumps.
