Evidence of negro origin of hbc in sicily italy

, : Evidence of negro origin of hbc in sicily italy. Haematologica 72(1): 95-96

The haplotype of the .beta. gene cluster and Hpal polymorphism in .beta.sgenes have been widely described. While the same studies have been performed on the .beta.cchromosomes in the Negro population, we have no data on our country. We studied six chromosomes with .beta.c for both .beta. gene cluster haplotype and Hpal polymorphism. The haplotype of the .beta.c chromosomes was similar to that found in the subtype "i" of the group A in Negro .beta.s genes, and the Hpal DNA fragment present was always of 13Kb. These findings suggest that HbC, like HbS, could have been introduced in to Sicily by Black populations during the Muslim invasions.
