Mouse, human and monkey hemopoietic stem cell have been studied in colony formation with the thin layer agar system. It remains to be elucidated whether every single colony was derived from a hemopoietic stem cell or if the myeloid progenitor cells also took part in colony formation. The differences in results previously reported may be explained by different culture systems.
