Exogenous superoxide toxic effect of the porphyrin cobalt complex on paramecium caudatum

The toxic effect of tetra sodium salt of cobalt complex tetra (p-sulfophenyl) porphin (CoP) on infusoria Paramecium caudatum has been investigated. All cells of P. caudatum have been established to perish in 3.2.cntdot.10-4 M CoP solution and only 30% of cells perish in CoCl2 solution of the same concentration. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreases CoP toxic effect almost 3-fold and does not influence CoCl2 toxicity. CoP toxicity consists of specific and non-specific. Superoxide ion-radicals are suggested to cause the P. caudatum death. 5.cntdot.10-6 M NiCl2 solution inhibits phagocytosis of P. caudatum CoP particles completely. The toxicity of CoP does not change in the presence of NiCl2. A conclusion has been drawn that the source of lethal action of CoP on P. caudatum is exogenous.
