Expansion and present status of the wood warbler phylloscopus sibilatrix in central norway

, : Expansion and present status of the wood warbler phylloscopus sibilatrix in central norway. Fauna Norvegica Series C Cinclus 9(1): 49-54

The Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix is a relatively new immigrant to Norway, first observed in 1877 in South Norway, and at present Central Norway represents its northernmost breeding range. After the first observation in Central Norway in 1946, only a few breeding observations had been recorded in this part of the country until 1970. Since then the species has expanded and the number of observations has increased considerably. The majority of the observations are from lowland deciduous forests, but the number of observations from areas at altitudes 600-800 m has also increased. It is suggested that the expansion and increased density of the species of Central Norway is mainly a result of prolonged spring migration due to higher May temperatures.
