Experimental keratitis sicca the corneal epithelium at the transmission and scanning electron microscope
Transmission electron microscopy showed that in keratitis sicca the essential lesion of the [rabbit] corneal epithelium consisted of a rupture of the cell membranes with formation of keratin filaments, which project exteriorly. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the cell surfaces became smooth and the cells appeared dark and without craters. The fundamental changes in keratitis sicca is apparently abnormal keratinization.
