Experimental leishmaniasis 1. a study of cutaneous and visceral infection in balb c mice

Experimental leishmaniasis 1. a study of cutaneous and visceral infection in balb c mice

Revista Iberica de Parasitologia 44(3): 265-278

The evolution of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in BALB/c inbred mice was studied. Three groups of mice were inoculated with amastigotes of Leishmania mexicana amazonensis, L. donovani ssp. and L. donovani infantum. The course of infection in these mice was followed 14 wk. The evolution of cutaneous lesions, the immunological response, and the presence of parasites in blood, liver and spleen were studied. All of the Leishmania inoculated BALB/c mice were heavily infected; the speed of the development of the infection was dependent on the size of the parasite inoculum. A delayed type hypersensitivity was always slow (0.31 .+-. 0.15 mm. maximum induration size). The humoral response was higher in L. mexicana infected mice (1/400 by IFA test) than L. donovani or L. donovani infantum inoculated mice (1/100 and 1/50).
