The development of experimental leishmaniasis in C57BL/6 mice inoculated with Leishmania mexicana amazonensis, L. donovani and L. donovani infantum was studied. Mice inoculated with 108 amastigotes died before the 7th wk after infection. Mice inoculated with 104 amastigotes suffered a self healing infection. Mice inoculated with 106 amastigotes of L. mexicana amazonensis suffered a nonhealing infection with low humoral response (IFT [indirect fluorescent immunoassay] 1/200) and a strong delayed type hypersensitivity response. Mice inoculated with 106 amastigotes of L. donovani infantum developed a healing infection; mice inoculated with L. donovani suffered an infection of uncertain development.
