Experimental studies on embryo transfer in sheep part 1 embryo transfer between different breeds of sheep after estrus synchronization

Experimental studies on embryo transfer in sheep part 1 embryo transfer between different breeds of sheep after estrus synchronization

Zeitschrift fuer Tierzuechtung und Zuechtungsbiologie 94(3-4): 209-216

After the synchronization with progesterone and PMSG [pregnant mares serum gonadotropin], 119 of 124 sheep treated showed signs of estrus. The season in which the animals were treated was a significant influence for the onset of estrus after completion of therapy. Breed, weight, age and the treatment with various doses of PMSG did not influence the onset of estrus essentially. The length of the estrus itself was significantly influenced by breed. Of the 65 ewes selected for embryo-transfer, 95.4% ovulated. The left ovary was more active. There was a marked effect on the ovulation rate by breed and PMSG-dosage. Increased estrus length was associated with increased ovulation rate. A total of 72-80 h after the 1st mating of the donor sheep, 57.3% of the ovulated eggs could be recovered. All embryos recovered from 1 donor sheep were at the same stage of development, or not more than 1 division apart. Of the recipients 71.9% became pregnant after embryo-transfer and 65.5% gave birth to young. Of the transferred embryos 41.4% developed to lambs.
