Due to the change from a 6-field crop rotation to a simplified 3-field crop rotation, there was a reduction in the average grain yield in the first and in the next 6 yr by 7-9%; in contrast, the yield in monoculture dropped by 50-63%. At a higher agrotechnical level (2 NPK + nutrient trace elements + herbicide), the reduction in yield caused by a short rotation was lessened or eliminated; the negative consequences associated with single crop plantings were reduced in the first 6 yr to 32%, but in the subsequent 6 yr, only to 59%. On heavy, humus and nutrient-rich soils (typical wheat soils) of the Zulawy area along the lower course of the Vistula river (Poland), a 5-yr long monoculture of winter wheat produced grain yields of up to 50 dt[decitons]/ha. At this location, the effect of field beans as a soil regenerant (i.e., interruption of monoculture) was slight, and on fertilized soils it was negative. On medium soils of the wheat soil complex a 6- or 7-yr long weed-free monoculture of winter wheat caused a drop in yield of 25 and 30%, in comparison with cultivation of winter rapeseed in a 5-field crop rotation (yield of winter wheat 50 or 42 dt/ha).
