Extended operation for sigmoid colon cancer and post operative urinary and sexual dys function

, : Extended operation for sigmoid colon cancer and post operative urinary and sexual dys function. Journal of the Japan Society of Coloproctology 37(1): 18-23

Urination and sexual function after such surgery for sigmoid colon cancer were investigated. After surgery with extended lymph node dissection was performed, disturbances in male sexual functions, especially disturbance in ejaculation, were observed in 46% of the patients. When the operations were performed with less extended lymph node dissection, male sexual dysfunction appeared only in 10% of the patients. Mild dysuria was seen in 21.6% of all the patients. Accordingly, preservation of the hypogastric nerves should be taken into consideration when lymph node dissection is performed. A method of operation for the preservation of these nerves is recommended.
