Extending the shelf life of eggplant solanum melongena using polymeric films

Fruits of the 'La Pastora' and 'Long Purple' cultivars of egg-plant were individually sealed in films of low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, shrink-warp and wrapped in paper bags and examined for marketable quality after 10 to 17 days of refrigeration at 8-9.degree. C. Film-wrapped fruits of both cultivars were of excellent quality after 10 days' refrigeration, but only 'La Pastora' egg-plants remained in good condition after 17 days, and an additonal one day's exposure to ambient temperature reduced quality only marginally. Seal packaging of egg-plants in high density polyethylene appears to be a useful and beneficial supplement to refrigeration, especially with the cultivar 'La Pastora'.
