Field predation of alfalfa weevil hypera postica and clover root curculio sitona hispidula adults

Field predation of alfalfa weevil hypera postica and clover root curculio sitona hispidula adults

Journal of Economic Entomology 73(4): 599-601

Predation cages containing tethered alfalfa weevil, H. postica Gyllenhal, and clover root curculios, S. hispidula (F.), were placed in border areas between alfalfa and adjacent woods in southern Illinois [USA]. Pitfall traps also were placed in these border areas, alfalfa, and woods to determine which major predators were responsible for predation in the cages and the relative activity periods of these predators. Large numbers of 4 major predators, [Evarthrus sodalis LeConte, Abacidus permundus Say, Gryllus pennsylvanicus Burmeister and Harpalus pennsylvanicus DeGeer], which had been shown to prey upon the 2 weevil species, were found in the same locality which contained large numbers of weevils, suggesting that these predators were a significant mortality factor for the 2 weevil species.
