Field responses of trypodendron spp coleoptera scolytidae to different concentrations of lineatin and alpha pinene

Field responses of T. lineatum (Oliv.) and T. domestricum L. to 3 dilutions of racemic lineatin in ethanol, combined in separate experiments with different concentrations of racemic .alpha.-pinene, pluse ethanol, were studied in the Black Forest [West Germany, containing Picea abies, Abies sp., Fagus sp, Fraximus sp. and Quercus sp.]. Catches of T. lineatum were improved significantly, both with lineatin at 10-3 and 10-2 ml/ml, added to .alpha.-pinene at 10-2 or 10-1 mg/ml, in relation to lower concentration of the terpene. For lineatin at 10-1 ml/ml, significant larger numbers of .female.female. responded to .alpha.-pinene at 10-1 ml/ml. In general, highest catches resulted from an .alpha.-pinene to lineatin ratio of dilutions of either 1 or 10. A high .alpha.-pinene concentration, of 10-1 ml/ml, significantly reduced the numbers of T. domesticum caught; in accordance to previous work, low concentrations of .alpha.-pinene caused little or no inhibition upon the species' responses to lineatin and ethanol.
