Field trials for microbial control of the nun moth lymantria monacha l

During a mass outbreak of the nun moth, Lymantria monacha, in northern Germany in the years 1978 to 1980, a field trial for microbial control of this severe forest pest had been carried out in two areas in the wild-life reserve "Luneburger Heide". Beside a Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) preparation and a nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV), the effect of a combination of the two microbials was tested. Field and laboratory data collected during the trials indicated that a sublethal dosis of B.t. (0.15 kg Dipel/ha) together with a low NPV-dosis (1011 polyhedra/ha) induced an earlier onset of mortality in comparison to the virus alone. In all the plots where the NPV had been applied, mortality reached more than 90%. In spite of this, severe defoliation occurred. In both experimental areas, the nun moth population collapsed due to virus. Unfortunately, this happened only at the end of the larval feeding period. In one location where population pressure was particularly high, the collapse occurred only in the second year after the dissemination of the virus. Other nun moth infestations outside of the reserve had been sprayed with dimilin. No incidence of virus was recorded from these locations.
