Flowering response of male sterile and maintainer lines of pearl millet pennisetum typhoides to different sowing dates

Four popular male sterile (5141 A, 5054 A, ICI-81 A, 3383 A) and their respective maintainer-lines of pearl millet were evaluated for their photo- and thermo-reactivity. Sowing in field was done at seven different dates spread over from mid March to mid July. Days to flowering was taken as criterion of the reactivity. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences for flowering time among the eight genotypes as well as among different sowing dates. The genotypes flowered differently at different sowing dates. Thus, the present material looks to be photo- and/or thermo-sensitive. In some genotypes like 3383 A and 3383 B the flowering was delayed even upto one month in case of summer sowing as compared to kharif sowing.
